On the eleventh
hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month ... we will remember them
On November
11, 1918, the armistice to end World War 1 was signed in a railroad car
somewhere in the Forest of Compiengene, France. This became an annual
observance in the United States, where it is called Veterans Day; in the
United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand where is it is called Armistice
Day; and in Canada, where it is called Remembrance Day.
This special
day is set aside each year to honor those who have served and are serving
in the armed forces to protect our countries in time of war and peace.
The poppy is
the symbol of this day because poppies grow wild in fields all over Europe,
many soldiers died and were buried in those fields covered with red poppy
flowers.
Victory
Day is where you get the term "V Day", people make the "V"
sign with their fingers.

Explain to your child that the country they live in is a very special
place because they have many opportunities and choices that are not
always available to people who live in other countries. Our freedom
is protected by men and women. These men and women sometimes have
to fight for this freedom.
We honor the brave men and women who have fought to protect our freedom
in November each year. Depending on where you live this special day
is called Veteran's, Remembrance or Armistice Day. |

They shall not
grow old,
As we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them,
Nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun,
And in the morning.
We will remember them. |
