May
is the fifth month of the year in the Gregorian Calendar and one
of seven Gregorian months with the length of 31 days.
May
begins (astrologically) with the sun in the sign of Taurus and ends
in the sign of Gemini. Astronomically speaking, the sun begins in
the constellation of Aries and ends in the constellation of Taurus.
The
month may have been named for the Greek goddess Maia, who was identified
with the Roman goddess of fertility, Bona Dea, whose festival was
held in May.*
Holiday celebrations are wonderful opportunities for children to
learn about the traditions that are cherished parts of people's
lives all over the world. Please remember that the stories are just
a simplified version of each celebration. As a parent the choice
of what holidays to celebrate is yours, but we hope that a sense
of humour blended with a little knowledge will help us all make
peace in this world by understanding our differences.
